Cultivar Collection

This course focused on exploring the importance of materials in design and their potential to convey narratives and emotions. We utilized digital and hands-on methodologies to develop a deeper understanding of materials and their transformative properties, with a focus on sustainability. Through design exercises and collaboration, I created a collection of objects that aid a new urban forager collect food from their local spaces.

Process

I designed and weaved baskets inspired by the hexagonal weave from Japan called "Kagome". This technique provides strength and reduces weight, and can form organic shapes around complex objects. In my pursuit to discover new possibilities for the "urban forager," I intentionally opted for plastic strapping material to create my bags. This choice was made to showcase how one can forage not only for locally grown produce but also for the materials to fashion a functional bag. By utilizing this innovative material, I was able to breathe life into the concept of repurposing and reimagining the overlooked materials within our urban environment. The Cultivars Collection is a group of lightweight, strong, and flexible bags made for carrying many items.
